FLOATING MARKETS - BANGKOK

Floating markets offer fascinating cultural experiences as well as glimpses into the local way of life of a bygone era. If you like outdoor markets and street-side shopping, you will definitely enjoy a day out at one of the floating markets surrounding Bangkok.

There are many floating markets and riverside markets around Bangkok. Some of these are new and others have been revitalized. This is part one of my comprehensive list of Thailand floating markets that you can easily do as a day trip from Bangkok.

 Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

Damnoen Saduak, the biggest and most popular of all floating markets, caters mainly to foreign visitors and is still a must-see. This buzzing market is at its best in the early morning before the crowds arrive and the heat of the day builds up. By 9 a.m. there is a traffic jam of tourist boats.

Taling Chan Floating Market

One of the famous market in Bangkok is Taling Chan Floating Market.
The Taling Chan floating market was started in 1987 with five bamboo rafts and later upgraded to 11 metal pontoons. These markets preserve a way of life in the past when communities lived near rivers and canals.
The street vendors are very pleasant and polite. Most of the stalls sell food.Their lives were closely linked to the waterways which provided the means for movement and trade in their agricultural produce.
This is more a riverside market that has a number of boats tied up alongside the pier.

Tha Kha Floating Market

Tha Kha Floating Market is located  in Samut Songkhram. Of all the so-called floating markets out there, this one has mant boat vendors selling to local people. It is much like Damnoen Saduak but there are hardly any foreign tourists here. This is because it is not so easy to get to and is not on many tour routes.
The main items sold there being fruits and vegetables. It is definitely a place to experience their traditional life, especially when vendors sell one another their own products. Therefore, Tha Kha Floating Market is also a place to explore if you want to avoid relatively more crowded floating markets which sell souvenirs for tourists.

Don Wai Floating Market

Don Wai Floating Market is located in Nakhon Pathom. Tourists can take a boat trip along the river which is very naturally beautiful while having lunch on the boat. It was mostly famous for the delicious boiled duck, but lately it has evolved in a more general food market also due to the improved food productions in the Nakhon Pathom Province. It is a great food market if you enjoy Thai cuisine.
It is a vast market where almost everything is sold: fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, chillies, dried and fresh fish, up to all the different kinds of sweet and sour snacks.
Being located on a river a huge variety of dried and freshwater fish is available including fantastic fresh shrimps from the farms located nearby.

Amphawa Floating Market

Amphawa Floating Market is located in Samut Songkram. Ampawa is an evening market. Amphawa Canal is occupied by vendors who pack their boats with food and drinks, such as fried sea mussel, noodles, coffee, sweets, etc. Visitors can enjoy a cosy atmosphere and music broadcast by the community members, explore the market and local food.  The highlight of Ampawa is the firefly watch at night. For those who want to see the numerous fireflies at night, rent a boat and take a trip.
